“Marketing is not an event, but a process… It has a beginning, a middle, but never an end, for it is a process. You improve it, perfect it, change it, even pause it. But you never stop it completely.”
~ Jay Conrad Levinson
Ok. So you want to make some money online. Or, you’ve already made some money online, but would like to learn more or even turn your online business into a 7 figure multi-million dollar business.
Or maybe just take a bigger bite out of the Internet pie.
My name is Janeth Duque and for the past 8 years I’ve built and marketed some of the most powerful websites in their niches. I have dominated my competition, and I started with nothing. I live in a third-world country, and have had to learn how to both read and write English while at the same time learn how to build, design and market a business with zero Internet or computer experience.
The first time someone asked for my email address, I gave them my home address, because I had no idea what email was.
I don’t want to seem as if I’m bragging, but in order for you to take me seriously you need to know my background. The fact of the matter is…I’m good at what I do and anyone that knows what I’ve built, knows it. Even my competition will tell you, whether they like me or not, “She knows what she’s talking about.”
There are doubters who will say, “Why should I believe you? If I believe what you say and hire you to do search engine marketing for me, you stand to profit from my expenditure – you may just be writing all of this for that!”
Let’s face facts: It is true that I own a search engine marketing company. It is true that I hope to win your business by sharing my expertise on this subject. But just because I have a vested interest in your marketing with the search engines does not mean that it doesn’t work. And just because I may stand to profit if you jump on the search engine marketing bandwagon does not mean that I’m not offering the best service and product for the money at my company, Geeks on Steroids.
Heck, you could take all my advice and do it yourself or go elsewhere if you want! That’s right; search engine marketing works whether my company does it for you, you do it yourself or somebody else does it!
You can choose to believe me or not. I am writing this manual after making my living online for nearly a decade. I started with an idea and I used ONLY search engine marketing and social media marketing to promote my business. At this writing I’ll do upwards of a million dollars this year from my own search engine marketing and social media marketing efforts.
Over and over again, friends and colleagues ask me, how I do it.
Now is my chance to tell them, to tell you and to tell anybody else who’ll listen just exactly how I do it. In this manual I am speaking from experience. And not only my own experience, but experiences gathered from spending time and energy building successful websites in several different industries – all using search engine marketing.
I have learned how to get results, plain and simple. I have already taught this to my staff. Here I will share this with you. I know that I can teach you EXACTLY how to succeed with search engine marketing.
I know it completely and utterly. I also know that, if done correctly, when you find your particular “formula” for your own business – and if you stick to it – you will, without a doubt, have terrific success.
“Internet Marketing”
The Internet has been playing a major role in our lives for over a decade. But just like all big technology driven shifts, some business are slow to react. Now I am not saying that’s a bad thing, as a matter of fact this is most likely the best time to get started.
We’ve learned a lot over the past decade or so, mostly from our own mistakes. And we’ve seen new technologies rise up and get attention like Facebook and Twitter, and have seen many others fall.
The internet is beginning to mature, and the rules are getting a bit clearer.
Google has become a cultural phenomenon, a lightning rod for controversy and a fundamental part of any business looking to make it. They are the fastest growing company in history, with a user base in the tens of millions.
Google is currently the machine that allows a consumer to get in touch with a business. Consumers ask the search engines questions, and it is every business hope that these questions will lead the consumer to their door steps.
The reason for this is that search engines drive a dramatic amount of quality focused traffic to business that are able to rank in the top of the search results. Intelligent business owners are earning large revenues from leveraging the quality and relevance of this traffic and converting it into direct sales as well as branding and awareness campaigns.
Visibility in the search engines create and implied endorsement effect, where searchers associate high rankings with quality, relevance and trustworthiness.
Ranking high in the search engines have created dramatic growth and success with both online and offline marketing campaigns. Consumers are increasingly turning to the web before making purchases, and organization are becoming more and more aware of the fact that they cannot ignore the search engines any longer.
“SEO Is Not a One Size Fits All Marketing Tool”
Google’s algorithm is complicated enough that not all keywords rank using the same methods and too make it even more complicated it is ever changing. What works today may not work tomorrow.
SEO professionals must research and test constantly to keep up with the ever changing landscape however; it is this ever changing landscape that provides search engine optimizers job security.
And no two projects are the same. Each project has to be analyzed separately taking into account things like;
When doing search engine optimization every project has to be looked at differently, even if they are in the same industry.
A 10 year old website would have to be marketed differently than a brand new website. The age plays a big role in what keywords a website can go after, as well as the current incoming links and current content on the website.
It’s extremely important to look at the business, competition and understand the landscape so a good plan of attack can be laid out. And it’s equally important to layout the SEO plan as soon as possible. If you are currently getting a website developed then you want the search engine optimization aspects of the site built into the design.
Your content management system, site structure, on-page content and much more will play a role in how well your website does when it is launched.
Do thorough research into your competition. Get on their mailing list and their email list. Start receiving their promotions. See what they do well and not so well; pick and choose what might work best for you. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Sure, being innovative is great, but doing what is already successful is practical and yields faster, more predictable results.
See what would make you want to call them as far as offers are concerned. Research ALL your competition and take the best aspects of their marketing and come up with something original.
Your business marketing strategy needs to be laid out in the right sequence and you should have some idea of a budget when you write it. Again, be realistic. “Run a series of three thirty-second TV ads during the Super Bowl” might sound like a brilliant marketing strategy, but at over two million dollars for thirty seconds apiece, can you really afford it?
On the other hand, when you build your business marketing strategy you mustn’t try and cut corners. Do what you can on the cheap, but don’t sacrifice quality for cost. Some things – like a great graphic designer, search engine marketers that understand what they are doing or new technology to make things easier – are simply going to cost money. The payoff is reaching more people with more quality. If you don’t promote heavily, it doesn’t matter how good your product or service is, no one will know about it and you will go broke.
It can seem intimidating at first, I know, but don’t worry. You are going to learn a lot in this manual and I will try to keep it orderly and provide enough examples for you so that you can figure out what the proper sequence is for your particular campaign.
Understanding the Search Engines
The Goal – To Convert As Many Visitors into Buyers as Possible
Finding information through one of the major search engines has become as common as watching television. In January of 2009 more than 12 billion searches took place (according to comScore).
That would be about 400 million web searches being performed daily. More than 4,500 searches being performed every single second of every single day.
Since approximately 65% of the search market share belongs to Google, they handle more than 2,900 searches per second.
People expect the search for information, entertainment, or the desire to purchase a product to only take seconds. When only 20 years ago it would have required a trip to the public library and hours of research to find only a small percent, of the information we can now find in seconds. We are now able to conduct our shopping, banking and even social interaction online.
So…let’s break down the searchers to see what percent can be used to generate an income.
Other words, how are people using Google?
What type of searches are they performing and how do online purchases get started?
A) The majority of searches are based on non-commercial search terms. These are people that have no intention of making a purchase.
B) The second largest searches are based on products and/or services. These individuals may make a purchase in the future but they are still at the very beginning stages of the buying process. These people tend to be very general in scope and often times do not know what they really want at this point. And, selling products and/or services to those who do not really understand what they want is very difficult.
C) The smallest but most profitable demographic is made up of people who understand what they need or want and are at the end of the buying process. These individuals often search by using product names, model numbers, and their searches may also contain additional buying words such as free shipping, discount or bonus which help us to convert the sale. Converting consumers who are using these types of search terms is much easier. And it’s the reason so many people are making 7 figure incomes.
The major search engines have created what investors call a disruptive event, an event that has changed the way something works. It is now critical for a business to rank highly in the search engines when someone is searching for the product or services that they provide, without that ranking the very survival of the business is put into jeopardy.
The problem is that that obtaining prime real estate in the search engines is not an easy thing to do.
Due to the fact that search engines have competition with other search engines they are always trying to improve their results. The burden is on the search engines to return relevant, fast and fresh search results. But due to the ever changing landscape, trying to understand and anticipate these changes can be a full time job.
Everyone wants to Rank for that perfect keyword and rightly so.
Last month 151 million people searched for the keyword Insurance. If you had a webpage ranked at the top of Google for that keyword you would bring in over 100 million people each and every month to your website.
And if you could only sell to 1% of that 151 million each month then you would be making over 1 million sales every month.
Sounds like some serious money to me.
However getting a website to rank in the top of Google for a competitive keyword can be difficult and time consuming and here lies the real problem. While you are trying to rank your website for a competitive keyword you aren’t making any money.
It could take you years to rank for a keyword like insurance, so for years you want be making any income off your efforts. It’s the reason most people give up before ever reaping the benefits of ranking for a truly competitive search term.
And it’s for this reason that we approach ranking differently than most everyone else in the SEO industry. The idea is to work you towards conquering the competitive keyword phrase while at the same time allowing you to see immediate results.
This allows you to rank for the competitive keyword phrase while at the same time seeing financial profit almost immediately. It’s not about entering into a competitive niche it’s about totally dominating a competitive industry.
In order to do this we first need to understand how a search takes place.
Let’s take a look at Bill from Atlanta Georgia who just bought a new car and is looking for insurance.
Bill goes to Google and does a search for insurance, after looking through the top ten results he is overwhelmed by all the different types of insurance. We have life insurance, home insurance, health insurance, boat insurance, flood insurance and the list goes on and on.
So…Bill returns to Google and does a search for car insurance.
This is almost what Bill is looking for and he is getting a good idea on prices but he’s still not happy with the results.
So…once again Bill returns to Google and does a search for best prices on car insurance.
Now Bill is finding exactly what he is looking for and he is almost ready to make purchases but before he does…
But first he returns to Google to make one more search and this time its best prices on car insurance in Atlanta Georgia.
The more precise the keyword phrase the easier it becomes to rank and the more likely the searcher is to convert into a buyer.
Ranking For That Perfect Keyword
5Chapter FOUR
So…if we wanted to build a website about cars instead of starting off trying to rank for cars we would break down into a small niche like 65 Ford Mustangs, totally conquer that niche and move into 66 Ford Mustangs and eventually into Mustangs then Fords and do the same thing with all the different models of cars. So we would have pages on our site like affordable 65 Ford Mustangs, 65 Ford Mustang Show Cars, Custom 65 Ford Mustangs and each of these pages would link to each other as well as back to the 65 Ford Mustang page. And the 65 Ford Mustang page would link back to the Ford page and the Ford page would link to all the other Ford makes as well as back to the home page for the keyword cars.
By breaking down the website into niches we are able to drive traffic almost immediate to the site and get the website ranking in the search engines, because there is less competition.
Now…the idea is to create pages and link those pages to the main keyword page for that niche, as well as too some other internal pages.
Example. I am an affiliate for a webhosting company I absolutely love. They offer great service, they have reliable customer support and they are cheaper than most other webhosting companies.
And there are tons of people searching for:
Rules to be Followed:
1. First we identify a target keyword phase
2. We then create a webpage, site, WordPress website (blog), Squidoo Lens, or some type of content which we design around the target keyword phrase. The preferred method for site creation will be a site based on WordPress on a domain name we own. This gives us the most leverage for easy Google ranking online.
3. We stack our sites with what I like to call ―conversion elements in order to convert more visitors into buyers. Conversion elements may include videos, simple (but highly effective) sales copy techniques, bonus offers and more.
I’ll come up with a list of about 10,000 keywords and I will then add buying words to those words to increase conversion as well as the time it takes to rank for a keyword.
We would use buying words like
| Buy | Buys | Buyer |
| Buyers | Buying | Bought |
| Order | Ordering | Orders |
| Ordered | Purchasing | Purchased |
| Purchase | Purchases | Cheapest |
| Cheap | Cheaper | Discounted |
| Discount | Discounting | Discounts |
| Special Offer | Special Offers | Sale |
| Sales | Sold | Selling |
| Value | Values | Valued |
| Coupon | Coupons | Cost |
| Costs | Costing | Shipping |
| Ship | Ships | Shipped |
| Sale Price | Sales Prices | Sales Pricing |
| Online | On Line | Promotion |
| Promotions | Promo | Promos |
| Promoting | Promote | Promotes |
| Merchandise | Merchandises | Merchandising |
| Merchandises | Merchant | Merchants |
| Refurbished | Free Shipping | Reasonable Price |
| Pre Owned | Used | Using |
| Using | Pre Own | Old |
We begin creating landing pages with unique content for each of the keywords. Every page we create starts off with something like .05 pagerank and we are able to funnel that pagerank up the ladder to the more competitive keyword pages. This means that by the time I get around to ranking the site for cars I’ve already got enough internal link juice flowing to that page that I’ve cut my job in half.
Basically each page I create will have 5 links going to internal pages and then one link going up the ladder to the main category page in that niche.
Of course in order to make all this come together we need a content management system that is easy to use and can handle 90% of the SEO stuff with the click of a mouse.
WordPress Powered Website – Most Recommended Method
It has never been easier to create a site that is not only pleasing to the eye but is also search engine friendly. WordPress, which is a free open source website content management system can be installed on most web hosting servers with several clicks of a mouse.
Originally, WordPress was created as a blogging platform. However, over the last several years more and more people have begun to use WordPress to power various types of websites.
I started using WordPress about four or five years ago and have not looked back since. With WordPress I can add elements to my sites which would simply have not been possible back in the day when I was creating static websites with FrontPage.
Thus, this will be our preferred method for creating and publishing content online. Your goal should be to start launch your own WordPress powered sites or to get to that point when you feel ready.
Benefits of Using WordPress to Create Content Websites
1. Ability to Use a ―Keyword Rich Domain You can easily launch a WordPress-powered website on a domain name you own and keyword-rich domain names rank incredibly high in Google. Thus, launching a website based on a keyword domain gives you a massive advantage over others.
2. You Control Your Own Site When you launch your own site you’re in control, not anyone at Blogger.com, WordPress.com, HubPages.com or Squidoo.com. All of the sites mentioned above can be used to our advantage. However, we do NOT have total control over the content we publish on them.
3. Free Getting started with WordPress will not cost you a thing!
4. Huge User Base Today WordPress powers billions of sites all over the world. Such a large user-base means that you can find help when you need it.
5. Hundreds of Available Themes WordPress sites are powered by ―themes. These themes are the look and the feel of a websites. Many of these themes are free while some are not. Changing the look of your site is as easy as uploading a few files and clicking a button or two.
6. The Power of Plug-Ins WordPress also has an integrated plug-in system so that you can add a certain plug-in to perform a specific function. There are many plug-ins which can help improve your search engine rankings, create affiliate links and much more. Plug-ins combined with themes make it an easy choice for experienced Internet marketers.
WordPress Powered Websites
There has never been an easier way to add pages to a website then with WordPress. WordPress has moved from being a blogging platform into being a full-fledged content management system.
With WordPress you are able to control your site, add pages, links, content, videos, photos and much more anytime you want.
And the best part is that it can all be set up to be optimized for the search engines the second you put it online.
Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines. Typically, the higher a site appears in the search results, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.
Now here’s where we upset the search engine community as a whole.
I don’t believe that search engine optimization should be limited to Google, MSN and Yahoo. Other words, to truly optimize a website you have to use the social media sites, not for ranking in Google but for ranking in those social media sites.
I believe search engine optimization should include making a website rank in the social media sites as well as Google, Yahoo and MSN. If it’s a popular social media site that gets a lot of traffic then we should be looking out how to optimize our client’s information to show up in that search engine.
By using the social media sites to drive traffic back to our sites there is a side benefit in the fact that it will help us to increase our rankings in the search engines. But that isn’t why we use the social media sites.
Whenever I enter into a new marketing one of the first things I do is set up a system that will let me know what is happening in that market.
I normally use three methods, the first two are http://www.google.com/alerts/ and http://notify.me for email delivered notifications.
I’ll make a list of keywords and have the two above systems notify me every time someone uses those keywords in The News, Blogs or Web sections online.
The third thing I would use is http://search.twitter.com. With this tool I can enter a keyword and get results that are only a few seconds old.
I am looking for stuff that most sites don’t talk about but get mentioned from time to time on forums or blogs and are a problem that people in the market might encounter.
Another thing I’ll be looking for is extremely long threads in forums. Long threads immediately point out that there is an interest in the topic. Chances are that the forum post has ruffled some feathers.
When I find hot forum or blog post I will be adding those keywords to my email alerts as well as creating articles about those topics.
Now I’ve got some hot topics to blog about.
You can hit the forums and start conversations based on the information you are getting every day by email.
This gives you an advantage that was easily set up and that most people don’t know about.
Okay…now take that information and write yourself a blog post.
Blogs are a great way to drive traffic to your site as well as to appear as an authority in your industry.
Now take that article and turn it into multiple formats.
This will get you 100 times the exposure for one article.
First write the article for your blog, then rewrite the article and send it to the article directory websites.
Then take the same article and turn it into 12 different formats.
Now…each of those formats we created can be uploaded to hundreds of sites and each one will link back to our main content page for that keyword.
Evil Red Monkey
When I finish writing this, this site will get a boost that should push it to top #1 spot for the search term evil red monkey. A lot of people will see this as proof that the title tag carries more weight than anything else.
But the truth is that by the end of the week this site will have dropped to the number #2 place for the search term evil red monkey. The fact that evil red monkey is in the title, and h1 tag and all in the text want matter, it will be out ranked because it is in the URL of the other site.
So…I’ve written a blog post, used the keyword evil red monkey in the title, h1 tag and throughout the content and even created a page on the website titled evil red monkey and linked that page back to the home page.
No doubt there will be a temporary ranking increase and the ice gal website will move to #1 for a short period of time. But by the end of the week it will sit once again at #2.
And the evil red monkey site didn’t get content about evil red monkeys added to it nor did it get a page about evil red monkeys or h1 tags with evil red monkeys in the h1 tags. Yet the evil red monkey website will continue to out rank the ice gal website because it’s red.
That’s right the color red will out rank a blue website every time. It’s just the way it is.
